The 7-mountain and 4-mountain hikes
Sunday May 26 2013

Bergens Tidende and the Bergen Mountain Hiking Association invite you to take part in the 7-mountain and 4-mountain hikes

Bergen Tidende and the Bergen Mountain Hiking Association invite you to take part in the 7-mountain and 4-mountain hikes. This annual event has become an attraction and something of a mass movement. No times are registered, and you have the whole Sunday to cover the approx. 35 kilometres of the route, which involves a total ascent of 2,300 metres.

Who can participate?
You need to be in good physical shape for this hike, and if you've stayed fit through regular walks, you should be able to complete the hike with no problem. The hike was organised for the first time in 1948, and this year it is being held for the 58th time.

Registration
The registration is online.

Food and drink
A bun and fruit juice will be served free of charge at Årstad upper secondary school. Fruit juice will also be served between Mount Fløyen and Rundemannen. Take along enough food for an all-day walk. Remember to take plenty of hot, nourishing drink with you.

Start and route
Start at Gravdal (beside Nutec) between 6.30 a.m. and 9 a.m. The hike proceeds from there up Lyderhorn on a well-marked path, continues to Damsgårdsfjellet, Løvstakken, Ulriken, the Fløirestaurant restaurant on Mount Fløyen, the Brushytten kiosk and Rundemannen. From there to Sandviksfjellet and then back to the Bergen Mountain Hiking Association office in Marken in the city centre. Participants' cards must be punched on all the summits and handed in to the secretariat in Marken on finishing.

Bus departures
Buses will be laid on from Nygaten near Marken to Gravdal. The buses run from 06.15 a.m. until 8.30 a.m. The bus ride is free. It is not possible to embark en route.

Dropping out
It is important to notify the organisers if you drop out of the hike. Tell one of the stewards. You must hand in your card. The organiser accepts no responsibility for participants who leave the route.

It is advised not to start on the ascent of Mount Ulriken after 4 p.m.

Safety
The Bergen branch of the amateur radio association Norsk Radio Relæliga has communications stations on all the summits and at the finishing point. They are in continuous contact with the hike organisers. There are Red Cross personnel stationed several places along the route to attend to safety. A team goes over the route at the end to check for stragglers.

Trophies
Everyone who completes the hike gets a diploma and a nice T-shirt on finishing. If you are over 65 or under 12, the 4-mountain hike counts as a 7-mountain hike towards plaques and statuettes.

After completing the 7-mountain hike you have earned/can buy:
1st time = 7-mountain plaque in bronze
(can be purchased at the finishing point for NOK 100)
7th time = 7-mountain plaque in silver
14th time = 7-mountain plaque in gold
21st time = Rambler statuette in bronze
28th time = Rambler statuette in silver
35th time = Rambler statuette in gold

If you are entitled to one of the above trophies, ask for the special form on finishing the hike. Hand in the completed form to our secretariat. Your trophy will be presented at the Association's members' meeting in the autumn.

4-mountain hike
This hike is intended for everyone who finds the 7-mountain hike too long. Start at Årstad upper secondary school at Danmarksplass between 7 and 10 a.m. The route is Mount Ulriken, Mount Fløyen, Rundemannen, Sandviksfjellet, finishing at the Association's office in Marken.
